10.11.24 by Phillip Lara

A melodious verse enters and floats in the desert of my mind
In this unforgiving wasteland, the song begins in a whisper across the valley of sand.
The notes come like a breeze stirring in the wind that wakes something inside of me
An angelic voice rises like a call to an oasis moving me forward
Deep in my heart I have found refuge in other songs before
How can I be so sure this one will be different never to silence my beat once more?
The voice beckons me so I follow as the dry sands shift and crack under my feet
The sun bearing down on me piercing my skin like needles of fiery rays
As the chorus erupts like a rush of water falling from the sky
I become familiar in the music, for the voice in the song is a soft echo of memory that I had to
surrender
It’s the voice that left me lost in the desert, I turn away for fear of the pain, the ache that instilled
in the depths of my core, I fear of the sands pulling me under again
The Melody wraps me in a cold embrace, the tone becomes tender
The voice singing to me, “goodbye wasn’t the end but a new beginning”
Their voice a reminder, I don’t have to remain in the desert forever, every note is a
glimmer beyond the horizon
The song now almost over, the ground beneath becomes soft as flowers
spring from the floor, rain politely drops quenching my thirst of water to my soul
The song now fades, as so does my sorrow
The voice reminds me,
There is more beyond

Biography: My name is Phillip Lara; I usually go by Phil. I am currently working part time at Aims and studying music to incorporate it into my creative pursuits. Lyricists from my favorite musical artists such as Brendan Murphy (Counterparts), Jonathan Vigil (The Ghost Inside), all the members of August Burns Red, Jt Cavey (Erra, Texas in July) and Ryan Kirby (Fit for a King) have deeply influenced my writing. Their ability to encapsulate raw emotion in their lyrics resonated with me and inspired me to create my own.

Beyond music, I have also been inspired by friends who write poetry. Seeing their work has encouraged me to explore my own voice through writing. Story telling has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I have taken inspiration from films as well as video games. I draw influenced from J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as well as his poetic writing style. CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia.

Music, poetry and storytelling have all shaped my imagination and continue to inspire my creative journey.
