There is no such thing as nothing.
Emptiness is a myth. The wind
blows to remind us that what
we see is less than what we are.
The sun fills our eyes with light,
feeds our skin. Yet we cannot see
the rays, only their reflection. The light
feeds our food, becomes what we are.
The invisible hand of joy lifts us,
the heel of despair crushes us.
Love brings us home, reminds us
of the fullness of all that we are.
This is the spirit of life, the eternal ALL.
The ONE of everything. We are the dream
and the dreamers. Creation and creators,
never alone, never without. How full we are.
In billions of years, no atom in our bodies
has been still. For eternity we have danced.
Please remember, there is no such thing as
nothing. We are. We are. We are.
Biography:
My name is Matty (they/them), and I am graduating with a liberal arts degree in spring of 2026. Yoga meditation is one of my greatest passions, and this poem is meant to serve as a meditation on the incredible fullness of the universe. I believe that poetry is the perfect way to express complex thoughts in a beautiful and accessible pattern, and I sought to achieve that with this work.
I believe that all of creation is an expression of a singular consciousness, and that even so-called ‘empty spaces’ still contain invisible forces. Chaos theory shows us that the universe operates in such a deeply complex way as to be entirely unpredictable and impossible to replicate. It can only be experienced, and only the universe is capable of experiencing itself. That is what I consider the meaning of this work.
As well as poetry, I also love to write horror. I’ve been published by the Denver Horror Collective for their Terror in the 5280 collection. I have self-published a screenplay and some short works, and am currently writing a novel manuscript.
