The childhood I lived never truly belonged to me<\/span>\r\nIt was shared with all the other curious minds in the world<\/span>\r\nWe didn\u2019t spend our days playing outside<\/span>\r\nNo<\/span>\r\nWe spent them fighting bad guys and villains<\/span>\r\nWe weren\u2019t busy sitting in front of the T.V<\/span>\r\nNo <\/span>\r\nWe were occupied dealing with the dragon terrorizing our kingdom<\/span>\r\n\r\nOne day, I was a high school student struggling with friendship<\/span>\r\nThe next, I was surviving in a dystopian world <\/span>\r\n\r\nMy life was spent living through the viewpoint of another person<\/span>\r\nMy face was never my own<\/span>\r\nMy actions were never my own<\/span>\r\nMy feelings were never my own<\/span>\r\nMy childhood was never my own<\/span>\r\nMy <\/span>life <\/span><\/i>was never my own.<\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\nThe many friends I made throughout my life never existed<\/span>\r\nThe countless adventures I went on never happened<\/span>\r\nThe hardships I\u2019ve faced will never be a reality<\/span>\r\n\r\nWhen my parents\u2019 screams echoed throughout the cold house at midnight<\/span>\r\nI did not cry<\/span>\r\nInstead, I tiptoed my way into my big brother\u2019s room<\/span>\r\nSnuck into his bed<\/span>\r\nAnd hugged him <\/span>\r\n\r\nIt was just another night<\/span>\r\nThe trilling shouts<\/span>\r\nA sudden new hole in the wall<\/span>\r\nAnd the front door slamming shut<\/span>\r\nBrother had already cried himself dry and was restlessly tossing <\/span>\r\n\r\nI slipped out of his bed and closed the door behind me<\/span>\r\nI shuffled my way to the dining room<\/span>\r\n\r\nMama was holding her head at the dining table, shivering<\/span>\r\nFrom the cold of the house or the heart-wrenching sobs, I wasn\u2019t sure<\/span>\r\nBut I gently took her head and pulled it to my chest<\/span>\r\nAnd countless other lives whispered with me<\/span>\r\n\u201cI know\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
