I know that she will outlive me.<\/span>\r\nWhen I take my final breath,<\/span>\r\nwhen my ribs start to cave in,<\/span>\r\nand when my spine starts to break,<\/span>\r\nand my skull falls to pieces,<\/span>\r\nshe will fill her lungs again.<\/span>\r\nShe will exhale what is left of me<\/span>\r\ninto your mouth,<\/span>\r\nand you will disregard its bitter taste.<\/span>\r\n\r\nShe will stand up straight<\/span>\r\nand watch<\/span>\r\nas I begin to decay,<\/span>\r\nand I will sit here<\/span>\r\npatiently<\/span>\r\nwaiting for you to notice my absence.<\/span>\r\nI will smile<\/span>\r\nsweetly<\/span>\r\nas you pawn after her steps,<\/span>\r\ncareful not to influence the prints from her feet.<\/span>\r\nI will be the post<\/span>\r\nthat holds you up<\/span>\r\nas you begin to fall harder.<\/span>\r\n\r\nBut my death will not be by accident<\/span>\r\nor disease;<\/span>\r\nit will be heart failure<\/span>\r\nand she is the donor that never gave.<\/span>\r\nThe saddest part is that I am not angry with you.<\/span>\r\nI am not angry with her.<\/span>\r\nHow could I be?<\/span>\r\nHow can the sick<\/span>\r\nhaste against the healthy,<\/span>\r\nif the healthy never knew you were sick?<\/span>\r\n\r\nHow can the ill<\/span>\r\nhate the thriving,<\/span>\r\nif they cannot care for you?<\/span>\r\n\r\n So still I stand here<\/span>\r\ntaking in any illness that you may conceive<\/span>\r\nand add it to my ever-diminishing life span<\/span>\r\nso that you may keep up with her.<\/span>\r\nI will let her outlive me<\/span>\r\nso that she will not mourn her loss of you<\/span>\r\nbut relish in your loss of me.<\/span><\/pre>\n
