Archived: Malfunction — Adison Linder (Freshmen)

There’s something wrong
A disconnect between body and mind
Severed spine
Too much time
Has passed and irreversible changes
Have been dealt and for these there is no help
There’s a frayed wire
Catching fire
Fiber optics curling and twisting under the pressure
Toxic plastic fumes rising up to the brain
Smoke detectors blare
Systems send doubts everywhere
Trying to stop an inferno with teardrops
Because the cranial road map
Spiralling, contorting, sparking neurons
Doesn’t match the map of the flesh
Screaming out with a high, soft voice
There never a choice
Grind down bones with files
Catch the dust and burn it
Cut here, here, and here
Scarring, swelling, putrid skin turning green
And rotting, pus oozing out of every pore
Splatters of blood coughed up on pillowcases from black lungs
To stop the fire
From the wire where it sprung
I don’t care
If I starve
If I bleed
If a freak or a monster is all they ever see
Just get me out of here
Please.
